Mitchelton’s Riesling vineyards date back to the 1960s, established by the then winemaker at Seppelt’s, Colin Preece. The winery has made thirty-eight consecutive vintages of Riesling. Produced solely from estate fruit, the 2009 Blackwood Park Riesling has intense aromas of lime cordial, warm grapefruit, honeysuckle and some passion fruit. The medium-bodied palate gives high acidity and a nice intensity of pure fruit. This wine finishes long with little phenolic pull and a suggestion of minerals. Delicious now, this wine should drink well through 2018. 3000 cases made. Located in the heart of the Nagambie Lakes region (very close to Tahbilk), Mitchelton is now under the umbrella of the Lion Nathan Group which is, in turn, controlled by Japanese drinks giant Kirin. The compelling and somewhat unconventional winery was built in 1972, resembling an early version of an air traffic control tower. Young senior winemaker Ben Haines seems to be adeptly modernising the approach to the wines while preserving the estate’s essence.Importer: Lion Nathan Group
