The 2004 “Gaston” is a blend of Grenache (12%), Merlot (76%) and Syrah (12%) from different appellations. It was aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 12 months and bottled unfiltered. It is a wine that has an old world feel to it as it airs out. Its mid-palate is light, but the wine is cool and refreshing. The Rhone components have a modest percentage here, but seem to dominate the wine’s flavor profile. It is earthy and a bit gamey, with very light tannins around the edges. At its very young age, it is already drinking fairly well, although the tannins are sufficient to provide some life and support. The wine should hold for a few more years. It is modestly scaled, but it will make Rhone lovers happy. Drink now-2012.
