The 2012 Reserva Real is the top-of-the-range blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. It was born and named after a visit of the king of Spain to the winery in 1995. It's a selection from grapes grown on slate soils, fermented in stainless steel and matured in brand new French oak barrels for 18 months. It has a slightly more mainstream, commercial and oaky profile, riper than the Mas La Plana from the same year, and perhaps an earthy, graphite-like sensation from the warmer slate soils. The palate is medium to full-bodied with abundant, slightly dusty tannins and some rusticity, perhaps provided by the oak. Concentrated and powerful, in a 1990s style. They think about this as a red for the long haul. 1,972 bottles and 16 magnums were filled in August 2014.
