This particular bottle of the 1962 La Tache Grand Cru, one of the monumental Burgundies of the 20th century, had a relatively low fill, but its only journey had been from Vosne-Romanée to Dijon, which may explain why it showed so well. Wafting from the glass with aromas of hoisin sauce, licorice, smoked black tea, orange rind, rose petals and plums, it's medium to full-bodied, suave and seamless, with pristine balance, incredible intensity of flavor without weight and an unerring sense of harmony. This silence-inspiring wine has to be tasted to be believed.
