The 2010 Poggio alle Gazze is an attractive Sauvignon laced with sweet white peaches, pears and sage. Winemaker Axel Heinz uses some batonnage, which gives the wine lovely textural depth and richness, even though malolactic fermentation is blocked. Varietal aromatics and flavors are present in the background. Hints of ash, slate and crushed rocks linger on the pointed, nuanced finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
The 2009 vintage was not easy at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia because of the scorching hot summer. Readers may want to take a look at my video interview with Axel Heinz for more on the 2009 vintage.
