This is one of the top estates of St.-Emilion. The ambitious proprietor, Comtes de Neipperg, is to be commended on the terrific job he has done at Canon-la-Gaffeliere since the mid-eighties. This 1993's saturated dark purple color is among the most impressive of the vintage. Aromatically, the wine offers copious amounts of dark, earthy, plummy, licorice, smoke-tinged, rich fruit, a sweet, surprisingly ripe, glycerin-imbued entry, and medium to full body. With low acid, and the fruit and texture concealing the wine's light tannin, this appealing, attractive effort should drink well for 10-12 years. Moreover, it is a reasonable value from what is largely a forgotten vintage.
